Data & Analytics Practical insights
Read Google’s generative AI report with confidence
Understand AI impressions in Search Console, compare page and country data, and avoid misleading totals when reporting your marketing visibility.
Google’s generative AI performance report gives marketers a dedicated view of impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is a visibility report, so begin with a question about exposure: which content is appearing, and where? A rise in this report does not by itself establish more website visits or sales.
Choose a useful comparison
Select a complete reporting period and a comparable earlier period. Keep the same property and filters. Group pages by a meaningful business purpose, such as product education or implementation guidance, rather than celebrating a sitewide increase without knowing which audience it serves. Record publication dates, substantial revisions and seasonal events beside the comparison.
Understand why totals differ
Google documents property-level aggregation for the default chart and page-level aggregation for the page table. Two pages from one site can therefore contribute differently to those totals. The report also offers country and device dimensions, uses Pacific Time for dates, and flags preliminary data. [1] Preserve these definitions in your export notes; do not force the page rows to reconcile with the property total by deleting apparently duplicate observations.
Make a defensible editorial decision
Imagine a practical buying guide gains impressions while its associated template does not. That is a reason to inspect the guide’s audience fit, linked resources and recorded website outcomes. It is not evidence that the template needs the same headline. Compare relevant page groups before changing their distinct purposes.
Keep the limitations visible
Missing access or low impression volume can limit what you see. [1] Maintain a separate website analytics view for visits and business outcomes, and label the relationship between those datasets as aggregate observation. Start with one page group and one reporting interval; save the filters so the next review measures a comparable question.
