Why ChatGPT Ads attribution totals can change
Reconcile ChatGPT Ads conversions after the September 2026 reporting update by checking click windows, view windows and the date used for attribution.
A jump in reported ChatGPT Ads conversions can reflect a reporting change rather than a sudden improvement in campaign effectiveness. OpenAI’s September 30, 2026 changelog documents new selectable attribution settings for GET Insights. Existing integrations that omitted those settings need a definitions check before anyone celebrates the result. [1]
Set the windows explicitly
The documented defaults are now 30 days after a click and one day after a view, with ad-event time as the date basis. Click windows can be 7, 14 or 30 days; the view window can be one day or zero, which excludes view-through attribution. These settings default independently. [2] Asking for a shorter click window therefore does not automatically create a click-only report.
Separate reporting from business activity
Consider an illustrative customer who sees an ad on Monday and buys on Tuesday without clicking. An eligible view-through conversion can appear in one report and disappear from a click-only comparison, although the business still received the same order. Likewise, changing the date basis can move an attributed result between daily rows. Neither operation creates a new customer.
Rebuild a comparable series
Save the original export, then request historical and current periods with identical settings. Record the account timezone, conversion goals, extraction time and date basis. Compare delivery measures separately from attributed outcomes: the update does not change impressions, clicks or spend. [1] Reconcile purchases with the order system, allowing for attribution scope and processing delays.
Explain the break before changing budgets
Annotate dashboards and stakeholder reports with the definition change. Where an old report cannot be reproduced exactly, show the discontinuity instead of silently stitching the series together. Use consistent settings for ongoing reporting and test commercial effectiveness separately. A wider attribution window can increase credited outcomes; it does not establish that the advertising caused those additional purchases.
