Test brand boundaries in AI-expanded search campaigns
Translate brand policy into testable search-campaign controls, checking competitor terms, excluded destinations and the actual ads shown after expansion.
Brand control is easier to evaluate when it is expressed as observable behaviour. ‘Stay on brand’ is too broad to test. Google’s AI Max announcement describes messaging and matching guidance through AI Brief. [1] Such instructions should be reviewed alongside the enforceable controls actually available in the account, not assumed to cover every boundary.
Write separate kinds of boundary
Distinguish where the brand should appear, what it may claim and which pages may receive traffic. For an illustrative premium furniture business, these could mean avoiding repair-only enquiries, preventing unsupported sustainability statements and keeping traffic away from discontinued collections. Competitor-name policy is a separate decision and may vary by market; obtain the relevant internal review before configuring it.
Map policy to a real setting
Record the campaign or account control used for each requirement. This may include an exclusion, an approved destination list or an asset restriction, depending on current functionality. Do not treat a natural-language preference as equivalent to a guaranteed exclusion. When the product cannot enforce a critical requirement, change the campaign design or keep the affected expansion feature disabled.
Test difficult examples
Create representative queries containing your brand, similar names, competitor names, product support needs and ambiguous category terms. Inspect available previews, search-term reports and final destinations after launch. Record what is observable and what cannot be verified from the interface. A clean preview set is useful preparation, but it does not prove that every future served combination will comply.
Make the review repeatable
Keep a compact record of requirement, configured control, evidence and owner. Recheck after new collections, domain changes or altered expansion settings. When a breach appears, preserve the example, stop the affected behaviour and identify whether policy, configuration or source content failed. This turns brand review into a maintainable campaign process with specific corrective actions, rather than a subjective debate each time the system generates unfamiliar wording.
