Review AI Max search expansion without losing intent
Evaluate AI Max search expansion through query intent, landing-page fit and lead quality, with clear exclusion rules and a bounded campaign experiment.
Expanded search matching is useful when it finds a new expression of a relevant need. It becomes wasteful when the campaign mistakes shared vocabulary for buying intent. Google’s AI Max guidance describes matching instructions through AI Brief, with rollout conditions. [1] Check available controls, then build an independent review of the queries and customers reached.
Define the intent boundary
For an illustrative business selling warehouse equipment, ‘pallet truck for narrow aisles’ may represent a useful purchase need. ‘Pallet truck operator jobs’ does not. Write down the commercial problem, eligible customer and excluded purposes before launch. Do not label an unfamiliar query irrelevant simply because it contains words absent from the original keyword list.
Group the observable queries
Ask an AI assistant to propose clusters from the search-term report available to you. Useful labels include product fit, comparison, maintenance information, employment and unclear. Provide examples and require an uncertainty label. Review a sample manually, especially mixed-intent phrases. The report may not expose every search, so describe conclusions as findings from observed terms.
Connect expansion to lead quality
Compare clusters using qualified outcomes when available, with the same qualification definition. A query can earn clicks and form submissions while attracting requests for a service the business does not provide. Join campaign identifiers to approved CRM outcomes and retain the time lag between enquiry and qualification. Avoid judging the newest leads before the sales team has processed them.
Change exclusions deliberately
Record why a term or theme is excluded, which control was used and when the change took effect. Preserve useful exploratory queries that assist future purchases where that role is supported by evidence. Review expansion within a bounded experiment instead of changing budget, landing pages and qualification rules simultaneously. This makes the next decision specific: keep a valuable intent cluster, revise its destination or remove a demonstrably unsuitable audience.
