Advertising & Performance Practical insights
Use AI to investigate wasted spend on weak leads
Connect campaign data with verified CRM outcomes to investigate weak lead sources, separating poor targeting from sales delays and inconsistent qualification.
A low cost per lead can conceal expensive failure later in the sales process. AI can help inspect the pattern, but it cannot diagnose lead quality from advertising metrics alone. Google’s Ask Advisor announcement describes campaign analysis across its products, with availability conditions. [1] Your CRM outcomes still need their own controlled connection and interpretation.
Make rejection reasons usable
Ask sales to distinguish unsuitable company, wrong need, invalid contact, timing and no response. These outcomes are not interchangeable. A lead contacted weeks late should not automatically become evidence of poor targeting. Check a sample for consistent classification and record the time from submission to first response. Correct the operational definition before asking AI to explain it.
Join only the necessary records
Link campaign and lead identifiers in an approved environment, preserving the attribution method and missing-match rate. Use aggregated or minimized data for analysis wherever possible. Include offer, destination, acquisition date and qualification status. Avoid exporting unrestricted contact details merely to produce a campaign summary; the analytical question usually needs patterns, not a complete customer dossier.
Turn patterns into competing explanations
Suppose an illustrative equipment supplier sees many rejected enquiries from one campaign. AI might suggest mismatched intent, an unclear minimum order or a form that attracts service requests. Test these explanations against actual enquiry reasons and landing-page content. Do not immediately cut a source when the underlying problem could be an offer the page describes badly.
Repair one cause and follow through
Choose a targeted change, such as clarifying eligibility or excluding an irrelevant intent. Compare subsequent mature lead cohorts using qualified-lead cost and downstream outcomes. Track response time to ensure a sales-process change is not mistaken for an advertising effect. Preserve rejected explanations as well as accepted ones. A useful AI diagnosis ends in a verifiable correction, not a confident story about why one campaign must be wasting money.
