AI Search Practical insights
Compare AI Mode and ChatGPT buying journeys
Compare AI Mode and ChatGPT search using matched buying tasks, consistent conditions and evidence checks instead of declaring a universal winner.
A useful comparison of AI Mode and ChatGPT search starts with the buyer’s task. Comparing attractive screenshots tells you little about whether either experience helps someone make a sound marketing purchase. Keep the decision, evidence requirements and stopping point consistent across both systems.
Write a task that can be completed
For an illustrative test, ask each system to help a small team choose a webinar platform that connects to its existing CRM. Specify audience size, accessibility needs and the integration requirement. Avoid naming a preferred vendor. Define completion as identifying a plausible option, explaining a meaningful tradeoff and locating evidence for the integration.
Keep conditions visible
Record the interface, plan, language, country, date and whether web search was used. Start with fresh conversations and document personalization settings you can observe. Ask equivalent follow-up questions, but allow the wording to remain natural. If one system asks for clarification, record that behavior rather than silently supplying extra context only to the other.
Score evidence and progress separately
Review factual correctness, source relevance and unresolved constraints. Then assess the interaction: did the conversation reduce uncertainty, introduce an unsupported assumption or send the buyer to an irrelevant page? Have a second reviewer score a sample without knowing which system produced it where possible. A source link is useful only if the linked page actually supports the associated claim.
Publish the tested conditions with the conclusion
Repeat the tasks before drawing conclusions. Report patterns such as stronger clarification or easier source verification within the tested sample, rather than announcing the best AI search platform for everyone. Product access and answer behavior can change. The marketing decision is which evidence your website needs to make available across both journeys, including clear compatibility details and an accessible route to the next action.
