Match buyer tasks to AI Overviews and AI Mode
Distinguish quick orientation from deeper purchase research and test what buyers need from AI Overviews, AI Mode and the pages they visit next.
Quick orientation and a detailed purchase decision require different kinds of help. A buyer asking what a customer data platform does may need a concise explanation. The same buyer choosing a platform needs context, constraints and evidence. Treat AI Overviews and AI Mode as experiences to investigate around those tasks, rather than fixed funnel stages.
Describe the decision before the interface
Create three tasks from the same product category: understand the concept, compare suitable options and plan implementation. Define the minimum information required to finish each one. For implementation, that might include source systems, identity rules and ownership. Avoid measuring success only by whether your brand appears.
Follow the transition into deeper research
Record whether an overview answers the opening question or leads to follow-up exploration. Google describes continuity between an AI Overview and AI Mode, but a research session should document the actual interface encountered. [1] Note where the user needs a source page to check a claim, inspect a limitation or complete an action.
Design pages for the unresolved work
A glossary entry can define the concept and link to an implementation guide. A comparison page can make tradeoffs explicit without reproducing the glossary. Keep the boundaries clear: the overview page explains what the category is; the implementation guide explains what the team must do. This gives visitors meaningful routes through the site instead of several pages offering the same introduction.
Use the findings to improve the handoff
Compare the questions left unanswered at each transition. If readers understand the concept but cannot judge fit, add a decision framework. If they can choose but cannot begin, improve setup guidance. Evaluate task completion with people who resemble the intended audience. The goal is a useful path from orientation to action, not forcing every search experience into a rigid awareness-to-conversion model.
