Compare ChatGPT Ads with an established channel
Design a fair ChatGPT Ads channel test with shared business outcomes, explicit attribution settings and realistic limits on what campaign results prove.
A new advertising channel should not win a comparison simply because it counts conversions differently. OpenAI’s current reporting documentation includes click-through and view-through attribution settings. [1] A useful channel test starts by making the measurement contract explicit, then asks whether the new source adds commercially worthwhile customers.
Write a common outcome definition
Choose the same business event for both channels, such as a paid order that remains valid after the normal cancellation period. Specify currency, time zone, attribution windows and reporting date basis. Keep platform-reported results alongside reconciled business outcomes. When a platform cannot provide an equivalent view, disclose the difference rather than force two incompatible figures into a league table.
Make the comparison commercially fair
Use comparable offers and destinations, while allowing creative to suit each environment. An established search campaign targeting explicit purchase queries is not automatically a fair comparator for a broader exploratory audience. Record these differences. Where volume permits, use a designed holdout or geographic experiment; otherwise describe the exercise as an operational channel comparison, not causal proof of superiority.
Include the learning cost
Track creative preparation, feed corrections and staff time as well as media spend. A promising cost per acquisition can hide a labour-intensive setup. Conversely, do not charge every reusable integration expense to one tiny campaign without showing that choice. Report both ongoing campaign economics and initial setup costs so the decision reflects the intended future use.
Let outcomes mature
Set the review date around the business’s actual purchase and qualification delay. Avoid declaring a winner from the newest incomplete cohorts or stopping the moment one channel looks better. At the planned review, document uncertainty and the next decision: extend the test, refine a specific problem or stop. A fair first comparison can justify another experiment without establishing that either channel should replace the other.
