MARKAIGEN / TREND ANALYSIS
Long-running marketing agents need an operating model, not just a demo
Agency experiments with longer-running agents raise practical questions about ownership, recovery, cost limits and evidence of completed work.

A reported deployment is not a general capability guarantee
Digiday’s reporting on Monks describes experiments with agents running for extended periods. Treat that as a specific agency account, not proof that arbitrary marketing workflows can operate unattended. WFA’s September research also shows that governance remains part of major brands’ AI adoption. Its sample covers large brand owners, not the whole small-business market. [1] [2]
Define completion before autonomy
An agent can finish its internal plan while leaving a customer task incomplete. Define the accepted output, the evidence needed to verify it and the person responsible for the result. For a campaign report, completion might require reconciled source data and a clearly labelled recommendation. For a live campaign change, it also requires authorised approval and confirmation of the exact change. The same autonomy setting should not cover both tasks.
Design the exception path first
Specify what happens when credentials expire, a source becomes unavailable, a cost ceiling is reached or an instruction conflicts with policy. Stop safely, retain the work already completed and hand over the information a reviewer needs. Repeated retries can consume budget without advancing the task. Keep a maximum runtime and retry count, and make restarting an interrupted task an explicit decision where duplicate actions could matter.
Evaluate the whole operating cost
Include supervision, exception handling, data maintenance and integration upkeep alongside model usage. Compare a bounded agent workflow with the current process on the same accepted outcome. Start with reversible work and review the failure log before expanding scope. The risk sandbox can structure a review of supplied scenarios; it cannot certify that a deployed agent is safe or enforce permissions in another platform.
Is a longer uninterrupted run evidence of better marketing performance?
No. Runtime describes execution duration. Evaluate accepted outcomes, errors, supervision effort and total cost separately.
