AI Strategy & Leadership Practical insights
Build original research into your AI discovery plan
Create an original-research program from questions your organization can answer credibly, with transparent methods, useful findings and accountable upkeep.
An original research program gives a brand a reason to contribute to a conversation rather than repeat it. Google’s helpful-content guidance asks whether content offers original information or analysis. [1] That supports a quality principle, not a guarantee of rankings or AI citations. Leadership still needs a research agenda worth funding.
Choose questions you can answer well
Start with recurring customer decisions and the evidence the organization can legitimately access. A hypothetical software business might investigate where new users struggle with a particular setup task. Prefer a narrow, answerable question over an ambitious industry survey with weak sampling and no clear use for the findings.
Fund the method, not only publication
Assign a competent research owner and specify scope, definitions, collection method and limitations before producing a report. Obtain appropriate permissions and protect personal information. Distinguish observed behavior from respondent opinion. Plan analysis and review time alongside the content budget so the headline is shaped by evidence rather than decided in advance.
Design a useful public contribution
Publish the question, method, results and limitations clearly. Explain which population the findings describe and where they should not be generalized. Provide accessible tables or downloadable supporting material where appropriate and permitted. Let the evidence support a practical decision, even when it challenges the organization’s preferred commercial narrative.
Maintain a research portfolio
Choose a cadence the team can sustain and assign updates or retirement dates to time-sensitive findings. Track use by customers, qualified engagement and citations as different signals, without claiming every mention causes revenue. Review whether the research changes product or marketing decisions internally as well. A modest program with trustworthy methods and ongoing ownership can give the brand a distinct contribution that remains useful beyond a single promotional launch.
