Test AI personas against real customer behavior
Use synthetic personas to generate research hypotheses, then validate their predictions against real customers before changing positioning or budgets.
A synthetic persona can answer every interview question immediately and still represent nobody in your market. Its fluency is useful for generating possibilities, not proof that customers think or behave that way. Treat AI-generated responses as hypotheses until they have survived comparison with independent evidence.
Choose a prediction you can test
Instead of asking whether a persona feels realistic, specify a decision-relevant prediction. For example, will prospective buyers misunderstand a particular subscription condition, or will one explanation improve comprehension? Record the predicted issue before collecting new evidence. Avoid rewriting the persona afterward and claiming it had anticipated the result.
Keep simulation and observation separate
Label synthetic transcripts clearly and never merge them with interview responses in a customer evidence count. Do not turn an invented remark into a testimonial. Build the persona only from information you are permitted to use, and document which customer groups the underlying research does not cover. A detailed biography cannot repair missing evidence about those groups.
Use an independent comparison
Test the predicted issue through appropriate interviews, usability research or a controlled message experiment. Anthropic’s evaluation guidance emphasizes human judgment alongside automated evaluation. [1] Apply that principle by having researchers assess whether the simulation identifies problems that real participants demonstrate. Look for missed concerns as well as apparent matches, and distinguish stated preference from observed behavior.
Set a boundary for reuse
A persona that helps generate useful interview questions may still be unfit to forecast demand or choose a pricing strategy. Evaluate each intended use separately and on fresh material. Record where the simulation adds useful hypotheses and where it repeats assumptions already present in the brief. Your next step is one small validation study tied to a real decision, with synthetic predictions documented before results are seen. Keep customers, rather than the simulation, as the source of customer evidence.
