Measure citation diversity across your content
Check whether observed AI citations depend on a few pages or span distinct topics, then investigate useful evidence gaps without chasing arbitrary coverage.
Citation diversity asks whether observed references are spread across distinct assets and reader needs. A high citation count concentrated on one statistics page can be valuable, but it creates a different maintenance responsibility from broad coverage across a topic portfolio. Neither pattern is automatically better.
Group by meaningful asset and task
Normalize tracking parameters and redirects before counting URLs. Then assign each cited asset to its main reader task. Avoid treating several versions of the same report as independent topic coverage. Keep the original observations so another analyst can inspect the grouping.
Describe concentration without inventing a target
Calculate the share of observed citations belonging to the most cited pages and show the number of distinct assets. Report the sample and period. There is no universal healthy diversity percentage for every website. A specialist platform may legitimately have one authoritative resource that answers a recurring need.
Investigate gaps against your editorial purpose
Look at topics your audience needs but for which you have little original evidence. Decide whether a new study, worked example or clearer documentation would help. Do not publish a weak article merely to fill an empty category on a dashboard. A gap in the monitoring sample may also reflect how the questions were selected.
Use concentration to plan upkeep
Give frequently cited assets explicit owners and update checks. Compare diversity over consistent periods and inspect changes in the underlying query set. The useful outcome is a resilient body of evidence that serves readers. A larger number of cited URLs is only meaningful when those pages contribute genuinely different information.
