What the EU’s AI transparency icons actually show

Use EU AI transparency icons with the correct scope, placement and accessible wording, without presenting a voluntary visual tool as certification.

An AI transparency icon tells viewers something about how content was created or changed. It should not look like a seal approving the campaign’s accuracy, privacy practices or copyright position. Before adding an icon to a template, decide which disclosure it is meant to communicate.

Understand the voluntary tools

The Commission’s transparency code supports implementation of specified Article 50 marking and labelling duties. Joining it is voluntary; the applicable legal duties are not. [1] The EU also supplies optional icons. Its guidance explicitly says that using those icons does not establish legal compliance by itself. [2] Treat an icon as one part of an implemented disclosure process.

Choose wording that matches the asset

Document whether the content is fully generated or partly modified and what a reasonable viewer might misunderstand. A short explanation such as ‘voice generated with AI’ can be more informative than an unexplained symbol. Do not imply that the organization signed the code simply because its designers downloaded an icon.

Check where the disclosure survives

Review the asset at the smallest intended screen size and in each export format. Test whether captions, controls or other overlays hide the label. Include accessibility checks and an understandable text equivalent where appropriate. Examine downloaded and reshared versions as well as the original page; a disclosure that only exists in the publishing preview is not a dependable release control.

Keep a modest implementation record

Save the chosen icon version, wording, placement rule and final previews with the asset. Record who assessed the disclosure requirement and any relevant exception. Reuse the design component for similar cases, but reopen the classification when the content changes. Consistency helps the audience understand the label; it should not turn a reusable component into an automatic legal verdict on every campaign.
