Marketing Operations Practical insights
Allocate AI credit costs to marketing campaigns
Track campaign-level AI costs with simple tags and explicit allocation rules, including retries and shared work, without pretending every charge is exact.
Campaign cost reporting should help a team make decisions without requiring every prompt to become an accounting project. Use direct attribution where the system supports it and a documented allocation method for shared work. Make estimated amounts visible.
Choose the useful unit
Start with a campaign or recurring service that already has an owner. Where supported, attach its identifier to AI tasks or exportable usage records. Confirm how the vendor counts credits and which plan terms apply. HubSpot’s agent product material is one example of a changing commercial context that must be checked before budgeting. [1]
Separate direct and shared usage
A campaign-specific translation batch can be assigned directly. A monthly brand-reference update may support several campaigns. Put that work in a shared category and allocate it using an agreed driver, such as accepted deliverables or planned effort, if allocation is actually useful. Do not present a convenient split as precise metering.
Include the work that failed
Capture retries, rejected outputs and regeneration where usage data permits. In an illustrative campaign, the final ten accepted images may have required many more generation attempts. Report accepted-output cost alongside total platform consumption so production quality affects the discussion.
Reconcile without overengineering
Compare the sum of assigned and shared costs with the vendor invoice or usage statement. Investigate material gaps and keep a small unallocated category when the source cannot support finer detail. Review the method when pricing changes. A simple, consistent allocation provides a better basis for campaign planning than an elaborate spreadsheet whose apparent precision exceeds the underlying records.
