Customer Experience & Conversational AI Practical insights
Keep sponsored AI conversations clear to customers
Review the customer journey into a sponsored AI conversation, with visible sponsorship, accurate product answers and a clear route back to independent help.
A conversation after an ad click can help a customer evaluate a product, but the commercial relationship must remain understandable. OpenAI announced a Sponsored Agents test with selected US advertisers in September 2026. It describes the sponsored conversation as separate from the original chat and from ChatGPT’s independent answers. [1]
Make the transition visible
At entry, show whose business the agent represents and why the conversation is sponsored. Keep that context apparent as the customer asks follow-up questions. Do not rely on the person remembering an ad label from an earlier screen. Test whether a first-time user can explain who is speaking and what the commercial purpose is.
Answer the purchase question honestly
A furniture shopper might ask whether a table fits a narrow room. The response should use verified dimensions and explain relevant limitations. It should not turn the advertiser’s catalog into an apparently impartial comparison of the entire market. Where a claim cannot be verified, say what information is missing and provide a useful next step.
Preserve customer choice
Offer a clear link to the business website and an understandable way to leave the sponsored conversation. Avoid presenting a purchase as necessary to obtain general help. Keep offer terms consistent between the ad, conversation and destination page. A change in price or eligibility should be resolved before the customer is asked to commit.
Evaluate comprehension alongside conversion
For an eligible pilot, test sponsorship recognition, answer accuracy, misleading implications and destination consistency alongside useful visits or sales. Review transcripts for claims of independence or neutrality the experience cannot support. The announced test does not establish access for all advertisers or Dutch businesses. Recheck eligibility before planning implementation, and treat customer comprehension as a design requirement rather than assuming a visible label has already solved it.
