Customer Experience & Conversational AI Practical insights
Make chatbot memory helpful and understandable
Design customer-controlled chatbot memory with visible context, easy corrections and clear limits, then test whether personalization improves the actual task.
Helpful chatbot memory saves someone from repeating a relevant detail. Intrusive memory introduces information the customer did not expect the assistant to use. Design the experience around understandable context: what is remembered, why it matters now and how the person can correct or stop its use.
Separate this conversation from future visits
Remembering a preference within a current chat is different from retaining it across sessions. Fin’s documentation describes retaining conversational context; that should not be read as a general promise about persistent memory settings. [1] Check the actual system design and explain the relevant behavior rather than using the vague statement ‘I remember you’.
Use a relevant detail transparently
For a fictional software advice task, the assistant might say, ‘You mentioned that your team uses Dutch. Should I show the Dutch setup guide?’ This makes the connection visible and leaves room for correction. Avoid surprising references to unrelated purchases or assumptions about a person’s circumstances. Relevance should be evident to the customer, not merely useful to a sales model.
Make correction effective
Offer a clear way to change a preference and inspect what the assistant is using where persistent memory is supported. Ensure a correction affects the underlying record, not only the next sentence. Coordinate retention and deletion behavior with the organization’s data governance process; a friendly conversational promise is not proof that a record was removed.
Test comfort and task success separately
Ask participants to complete a repeat visit with a relevant remembered detail, then with an outdated one. Observe whether they understand the source of the personalization and can change it. Gather optional feedback about comfort without inferring feelings from silence. Compare reduced repetition with errors caused by stale context. Keep memory only where its usefulness and controls can be demonstrated for the intended customer task.
