SEO Practical insights
Align hreflang and canonicals for EN and NL content
Give English and Dutch articles separate canonical ownership and reciprocal language links, then test the full localized page relationship after publication.
English and Dutch editions can express the same underlying article while serving different readers. Their language relationship should not erase either version. Google’s international documentation explains alternate-language annotations and reciprocal references. [1] Use that relationship alongside appropriate canonical ownership.
Confirm that both destinations are real
Before adding language links, check that each URL is public, returns the intended content and uses the declared language. Do not point to a draft, redirect loop or unrelated category page as though it were the translation. A language switch should preserve the reader’s task.
Use a consistent pair
Each published edition should identify itself and the alternate version in the language annotations. Keep the canonical appropriate to that edition. If the site uses a default language selector, assess whether an x-default reference is relevant; do not add one simply to fill a field. The actual site architecture determines the implementation.
Check more than the article body
Inspect title, description, navigation and the next-step links. A Dutch article that sends readers unexpectedly into English-only signup may still have technically valid annotations but a poor experience. Distinguish a missing translation from a product genuinely offered only in one language.
Maintain the pair through changes
When a slug changes, update reciprocal references, internal links and redirects together. Validate the final HTML rather than relying solely on a translation-plugin setting. Keep a small set of representative bilingual pages in release checks. The objective is a clear relationship between complete language experiences, with no accidental canonicalization that makes one edition disappear from consideration.
